Travel adapters can be found most places in the world these days. You will certainly find them in airports as international travelers are often in need of them. There are more than a dozen different types of plug socket used in the world today, so if you travel a lot you will almost certainly need one of these someday. But this is a really simple concept that manufacturers very often get so wrong. The items are often bulky, heavy and not very practical. Many are quite fragile, brittle and do not fit properly, so they can be an awful waste of money.

The Skross brand, however, may very well be the one to choose. Skross have quite a few versions of the world adapter on the market, some with an “earth” pin and some without. Some have integrated USB ports in both sizes, portable battery attachments, and other features too. It works well in most countries. This review deals with the Skross MUV USB.

Adapters are generally a bit big and heavy. This can be said of the Skross too, but it is also very well made and robust. It fits the United States “two-pin” socket, of course, but it also fits the European, Australian, New Zealand, Japanese and United Kingdom sockets. If you purchase something while on holiday in these countries you will be able to use it via the adapter at home.

It has a simple system that means you can use it with most output sockets in the world. Using the list on the product page select the type needed with one of the black sliders on the side. To retract this, you just press the release button on the opposite side and put the slider back.

This adapter handles voltages from 100 to 250 volts, but BEWARE: this does not mean your appliance or device can. Always check before turning it on. You may also need a voltage converter. There are two USB sockets at the top of this device which put out 2.1 amps. You can charge two smartphones or other small gadgets, otherwise, you can charge an iPad on its own. If your phone has a fast charge facility, you should charge it by itself or use a wall charger rather than the USB port.

This product has been extensively tested in the United States and Europe with two pin and USB plugs. The device has been shown to work very well. The plugs fit nicely unlike so many other adapters on the market. That the plugs fit so snugly is a definite plus. The USB sockets also perform well, charging phones quickly.

There is a small red light to indicate that the device is powered up. The only downside with this adapter is that it does not have an “earth” socket. Therefore, you will not be able to use it for the MacBook charger or some of the other laptop chargers.

This is probably the best universal travel adapter available today. It is sturdy and reliable and has been shown to work well in many parts of the world. It’s also a good thing to have because hotel rooms are notoriously short on electric outlet sockets. It would be way better if it were somewhat smaller but nevertheless, it is a really good product. It is ideal for most travelers but sadly not for those who will be needing to charge MacBooks or other devices needing three-pin sockets.
