When you have a lot of experience backpacking, there are certain things that you will have learned on the way. Everything would have been different if there was an older backpacker to share their wisdom with you before your first trip. Fortunately, we understand this and would like to share some pretty useful tips with the backpacking newbies and spare them a lot of trouble. If you’re planning to go on a trip, but you’re not yet sure if it’s for you, then follow this list to prepare for it the best way possible. Let’s get started!
There’s no need to bring half of your wardrobe with you into the mountains. Organize whatever you think is necessary and then leave half of it behind. People are used to overpacking, carrying dozens of pounds more than needed, and looking like mules. If you feel like your back will crack under the terrible weight, unpack it and make it light. Backpacking means moving around with a backpack, so you better make it as easy for yourself as possible.
Don’t plan too much
Even if you spend months in advance planning for your trip, things can change. Don’t worry too much and learn to go with the flow. After all, backpacking is all about having an adventure and finding a creative way to travel. If you are scared of everything and don’t want to take risks, then backpacking is not for you. Learn how to enjoy relaxing in a stranger’s backyard or sleeping in a hammock at a small village bar. No thrill – no adventure!
Do a little research
A little bit of prior research about the place you’re about to visit can be helpful. Know where are you going, make a list of places to visit, foods to try, mountains to climb.
Eat like an adventurer
Street food won’t kill you! A lot of people are afraid of the street food stands and think they will die the same day if they try any of the local food. In fact, if you see that everybody’s eating there, that’s a pretty good sign that it’s probably safe and fresh. If you see locals with kids eating there, you know you can eat there as well. Don’t miss the opportunity to try a meal that you can’t find back home. Tasting new food is also a part of the backpacking adventure. Be brave when it comes to food!
Wear good shoes
Think of your feet as your best friends while on the road. Nothing can spoil your journey quite like a pair of feet covered in blisters. You need comfortable hiking shoes made out of waterproof material and with ankle support. Keep in mind that you will spend a lot of time walking and exploring the places you visit, so you need to feel comfy. If your shoes are new, try them out before your trip. Go for a shorter hike and walk on different terrain.
Pack one nice outfit
Just in case you get invited to a fancy party or a nice dinner, bring some cute shoes and clothes. Being a backpacker doesn’t always mean dirty socks and sweaty shirts. You can be dressed decently from time to time.
Travelling alone will help you meet new friends and learn a new language faster than being with the crowd from back home. Focus on communicating with locals and ask for help anytime you need it. When you try speaking their language, they will be happy to do you any favor.
