If you’re a traveling enthusiast that’s tired of big cities and crowds, then maybe it’s time for you to start discovering small towns around the world. There are many cute places in almost every country we visit but never get to hear about. Do your own research before heading to a new destination, and try to locate the small, charming towns that sometimes offer more excitement and interest than the noisy, touristic cities.
Burano, Italy
Burano is a small island town in the Venetian Lagoon in Northern Italy. The town is famous for its colorful houses that attract many tourists that come for sightseeing and to buy lace goods. The residents of Burano must send a letter to the government if they want to paint their houses and wait for a reply with a list of colors they can use. Using the wrong paint color is punishable by law.
Qaqortoq, Greenland
Qaqortog is a small Lego-block town in southern Greenland. Qaqortog is the fourth largest town on the island and it was one of the first inhabited in the prehistoric period. Starting with the Saqqaq culture 4300 years ago, the town has had a continuous human presence. If you decide to visit Qaqortog in winter, you will get the chance to drive around in a snowmobile.
Göreme, Turkey
Goreme is a small town in Cappadocia, Turkey, famous for its fairy chimney rock formations. The region is an attractive touristic destination with a rich history that includes Greek and Persian secrets. Escaping the political turmoil, people built tunnels into the rocks, and many of them were used to build churches and homes. The churches are remains from the period when the Christians were returning from Rome during the Roman Era. Most of the churches can be still seen today along with small houses carved into the walls of the beautiful rock formations.
Sidi Bou Said, Tunisia
The small town of Sidi Bou Said is located in Northern Tunisia, about 25 miles from the capital Tunis. The town has a characteristic blue and white painted architecture that resembles the buildings on the Greek island Santorini. If you are an artistic soul that loves the pleasant North African weather and the sea, then Sidi Bou Said is a place that you must visit. Many famous artists, painters, writers, and philosophers from Europe moved to this charming town in the 1950’s to create their great work of art and teach in the Tunis universities. The best time to visit Sidi Bou Said is during the winter when the temperatures are moderate.
Hoi An, Vietnam
Hoi An is a small town in Vietnam that has more lanterns than people. The historic district of Hoi An is known as a well-preserved South Asian Port from the 15th century. The buildings in the town have domestic and foreign influences, therefore, you can see many different architectural styles that will leave you breathless. Many people visiting Hoi An like its eclectic spirit so much that they decide to move there, and spend a few years in experiencing a new life.
Cinque Terre, Italy
Cinque Terre is a part of the Italian coast with five beautiful small colorful villages on the cliffs. All the houses in the villages are painted in different vivid colors that make you think you are in a candy shop. Cinque Terre means Five Earths and the area contains Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The rugged landscape is full of terraces and small houses built over the centuries by the local people. The five villages are connected with boats, pats, and trains. Cars are not permitted. Cinque Terre is an extremely popular tourist destination and the best time to visit is summer.
