Largest herbivore animals that we’re scared of

What you put on your plate is your choice, and nobody should care about it. But there are meat-eaters that say that you can’t develop good body strength or mass if you only eat vegetables. Well, this may apply to human vegans (only in some cases), but vegan animals are proof of the complete opposite. In fact, some of the world’s largest animals feed themselves with plants alone, and they can grow to tremendous sizes with amazing strength. Here you can learn about the gentle beasts that will never harm you unless they’re threatened.

The Elephant

Is there anyone who doesn’t like elephants? However, many people are scared of them because of their size. But there is absolutely no need to be afraid of these magnificent giants. Elephants are completely herbivorous, and they gain all their weight by eating plants. The Indian Elephant is smaller than its cousin, the African elephant. A grown-up elephant can eat between 200-600 pounds of plants per day. They basically spend 12-18 hours per day feeding. Don’t be afraid when you see one in the wild because you’re not on its lunch menu.

The Rhino

The rhino is another strong and powerful animal that only feeds on plants. It’s never aggressive unless you come too close or it feels endangered. Even if a Rhino attacks you, they will never eat you.  All five species of rhinoceros – the White Rhino, Black Rhino, Indian Rhino, Javan Rhino and Sumatran Rhino are herbivorous. The Black Rhino is known as the biggest eater and has a diet of more than 200 plant species, unlike its cousin the White Rhino which is a pure grazer because of its wide upper lip.

The Hippo

When people see a Hippo nearby they start screaming in panic, although not because of the Hippo, but because of the crocodiles that share the same territory. Even though they only eat plants, male hippos can be extremely aggressive, especially during their mating season. They fight between each other or with other animals that come near them. But if you only observe them from a distance and stay quiet, they will never come after you.

The Bison

If you think a herbivore can’t build muscles, look at this massive example. Bisons may look lazy, but they can attack without  warning. The mature male bison weighs approximately 2,000 pounds and the female weighs about 1,100. Bison can run 40 miles per hour, and they eat all the native grass species that grows in the United States and Canada.

The Manatee

Would you like to swim next to a 1,300-pound Manatee? They are gentle giants that don’t eat other animals, and won’t do you any harm, but their size is rather scary. If you are a diver that loves to explore marine life you probably won’t mind seeing one, but for any regular swimmer, a Manatee encounter would mean an instant heart attack.

The Horse

Strength, elegance, and loyalty are the first three words that describe this powerful plant eater. The relation between the horse and the human dates back thousands of years. The horse was one of the first domesticated animals.

Is the whale herbivorous?

You are maybe wondering why is the whale missing from this list? It’s the largest living creature on the planet and it eats plants. Well, the reality is not quite like that. All whales are carnivorous because besides the plants they eat they also eat fish, octopus, squid, and other seafood which is, of course, meat. Besides that, Orca whales are famous for killing seals whenever hunger strikes. This doesn’t mean that the whale will eat you, but they are not only plant eaters, and that’s a fact. Keep an eye on these beautiful creatures and respect their natural habitat. Good luck!
