The Northeast provides a wide variety of nature and adventure opportunities. In this part of the country, you can find anything from surfing on the sandy Atlantic coast to hiking in the mysterious woods of the Berkshires. To make it easier for you and give you a quick travel guide through New England, here are some of the unique wonders of the area that you can visit on your next family trip.
Acadia National Park is a breathtaking slice of New England that contains many distinct environments. Here you can glide through the glassy lakes, climb mountain peaks, trek through deep woodlands, or explore the Maine coastline. The carriage-road system that runs through the park has 17 stone-faced bridges over streams and along waterfalls and cliffs from where you’ll get stunning views of the whole area.
At Echo Lake Beach, you can see not just peregrine falcons, but also black bears and moose. Don’t miss the only sandy beach in Acadia, the Sand Beach and make sure you visit the Thunder Hole and listen to the roaring sound of the powerful ocean.
Newburyport is a small coastal city only 50 minutes north of Boston. The cobblestone streets and brick downtown shops and restaurants show that the town is still strongly connected to its past. The architecture is charming, and it invites visitors to sit on a bench on the waterfront and enjoy the sight of the fishing boats in the distance. While you’re here, jump to Plum Island and visit the beautiful lighthouse. If you’re a fishing enthusiast get ready for striped bass that run here throughout the warmer months.
The Cog Railway is the world’s first mountain-climbing cog railroad. Starting at Mount Washington Valley and ending slowly at Mount Washington summit in Bretton Woods, you can climb a diesel or biodiesel locomotive and enjoy an experience that you don’t find just around any corner. The train travels around 3 miles per hour which allows visitors to really enjoy the slow ride and get a close look at New Hampshire’s White Mountains range. The breathtaking views of the lush forests are worth the trip to the top which takes about 1 hour. The return journey takes about 40 minutes.
Mystic Seaport is a place that will take you back to a time when the wooden-hulled boats transported men to the sea. The seaport includes three main elements: a shipyard, exhibit galleries and a recreation of a 19th-century coastal village. Taking a carriage tour through the village is a must for everyone who enjoys going back in time and experiencing the same atmosphere as people were living before.
Off the coast of Portland, there is a chain of islands that stretches from Portland to Machias Bay. One of the most popular among them is Peaks Island which has sandy beaches for you to enjoy, plenty of restaurants, and an artist community. If you like biking, then head to Cliff Island and bike its dirt roads. History buffs will be amazed by Fort McKinley on the Great Diamond Island, while any golf fans can spend the night at Chebeague Island. The Casco Bay Lines will ferry visitors along their island-hopping tour, stopping at many of the major islands in the area.
New England is one of the most beautiful parts of the US that offers a variety of stunning destinations that everyone should visit. If you still don’t know where to go on your next vacation, maybe New England’s wonders are the perfect place for you. Take care and good luck!
