Afternoon soaks at Hot Tub Hot Springs are perfect after a long day of hiking
When most people think about the Mammoth Lakes in California, scenes of powdery mornings and frosty noses come to mind. However, Mammoth Lakes has a variety of outdoor activities once the snow melts that are perfect for sunny, weekend getaways.
Mammoth has a variety of hot springs thanks to the abundance of geothermal activity in the area and surrounding landscape. The most popular hot spring, Hot Tub, is located right next to the airport off of the 395.
These springs have a wooden bridge that leads to them from the parking lot and are great for big groups. If you are willing to explore around the area a little more you may be able to find Crowley Hot Spring, Pulkey’s Pool, and Crab Cooker Hot Spring. These pools are smaller than Hot Tub but much more secluded and serene.
Once the snow melts on the slopes, mountain biking season starts! Bikers can buy lift passes for the Summer the same way one would for the Winter season. You can rent high-quality bikes at the lodge, or bring your own. Notable trails include a trail called Kamacazi that runs from the top of the slopes to the bottom. They also hold a race on this trail once a year for riders.
Mammoth has a vast backcountry full of adventures for those that are willing to put in the effort. The intense altitude makes hiking difficult for non-mountain dwellers, but that’s part of the fun! Mammoth is home to Devils Postpone National Monument and the famous Rainbow Falls. The area also has various backcountry trails for backpacking. Many of the hikes take you to glacier melt lakes that are perfect for a refreshing afternoon dip.
There are various locations to go fishing near the town of Mammoth Lakes. Above the town, you can head up to Mammoth Lakes Basin and rent a boat to fish. There is also good fishing on the way in and out of town on the 395.
If you are looking for a closer option, Mammoth Creek runs directly through town and is open for fishing. Just be sure to get a permit before you head out!
The Margarita Festival, Bluesapalooza/Brews, June Lake Jam Fest, and Mammoth Festival of Beers are just a few of the many musical events in the area. If you are interested in live outdoor music, it is essential to attend a summer concert in Mammoth. Grab a couple friends, a picnic blanket, and head out to see some bands!
