Whale watching in Puerto Lopez, Ecuador

Whales! These majestic animals are the biggest living mammals on Earth. They are generally very sensitive animals that don’t mind the company of humans as long as it’s not disturbing and putting their lives in danger.

There’s a few of us here at Outdoor Revival HQ that have visited with whales and it’s an amazing experience, so, if you are an animal lover, you will enjoy their beauty while observing them from a boat. Even if you’re not a fan, their gentle sounds will make you fall in love with them.

Whale

Humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean to mate and to have their babies. They travel in groups, so when you go whale watching you can see lots of whales from the both sides of the boat.

Puerto Lopez is a small fishing town on the Ecuadorian Coast, famous among tourists from all over the world for its whale watching tours and excursions to the nearby islands of Salango and Isla de la Plata.

Besides whales, these tours offer bird watching. Here you can find the famous blue-footed booby, which is one of the biggest attractions at Galapagos Islands.

Blue-footed boobie

Salango Island is a small rocky island with almost no vegetation, it is only from May to September you can see some green bushes because of the rainy season.

The island doesn’t have sweet water, so it was never inhabited. The only residents who like the conditions are the boobies. They live in colonies and make their nests in the rocks. When they’re born their feet are white and after two months the color starts changing. The females are only looking for young male boobies to keep their species healthy.

Salango Island

Around the Salango Island, you’ll have the opportunity to snorkel in the warm Pacific waters. There is a huge variety of tropical fish and coral reefs. The same boat that takes you to see the whales will take you to the best snorkel spot in the area. For all you adventure seekers, this tour will be the best thing you can experience while visiting the Ecuadorian coastline.

Snorkel around Salango

On the way back the guides will give you refreshing juices and homemade banana cake. After seeing all the natural beauty of Puerto Lopez, you can have a nice beach lunch and enjoy your favorite fruit cocktail. The seafood is a must-order because it’s fresh from the ocean.

Whale

With all these activities there is no way you’ll get bored here, there’s something for every taste.

If planning to visit South America this summer, then Ecuador is what you need to see. The whales will be waiting for you until September, so you still have time to plan your trip.

If you’ve not been thinking about visiting Ecuador this year then maybe you should start, it’s a great opportunity to go somewhere that’s a bit different to the usual locations.

Good luck!
